Rapid Response Research Grant

Overview: The Center on Contemporary India at Berkeley is pleased to announce its first round of Rapid Response Research grants. These grants are available to graduate students from all disciplines, who are conducting research on or related to contemporary India, defined as the post-Independence era, with the understanding that such projects may include elements from earlier periods. Grants are intended to be provided in a relatively quick manner, in order to respond to changing circumstances, new demands in their research, and/or new opportunities for research. Students at any stage of their graduate career may apply for funding. Recipients of this grant will be required to submit a one-page report and give a brief presentation on their work at a CCI Research Conference in the Spring semester of 2022.

Overview: The Center on Contemporary India at Berkeley is pleased to announce its first round of Dissertation Research Grants. All UC Berkeley graduate students in good standing who will formally advance to candidacy (will have satisfied all requirements of the Ph.D. except the dissertation) by the Fall of the fellowship term, may apply. Funds will not be available until the student has advanced to candidacy. These grants are intended to support doctoral candidates from all disciplines conducting research on or related to contemporary India, defined as the post-Independence era, with the understanding that such projects may include elements from earlier periods. The grants may be used to fund research expenses, including travel, lodging, payments to research assistants, data collection, other field expenses, etc.

Award Amount: Up to $5,000

Award Amount: Up to $15,000

Application materials:

  1. A description of the proposed research (up to 2 pages, double-spaced, 12-pt font, PDF format)
  2. A two-page CV (PDF format)
  3. A one-page budget plan (PDF format)
  4. A list of all other sources of support for the academic year (including summer)
  5. An unofficial Berkeley transcript
  6. The name of someone willing to serve as a reference

Application materials:

  1. A description of the proposed research (up to 4 pages, double-spaced, 12-pt font, PDF format) 
  2. A two-page CV  (PDF format)
  3. A one-page budget plan (PDF format)
  4. A list of all other sources of support for the academic year (including summer)
  5. An unofficial Berkeley transcript 
  6. A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s advisor

Application Deadline & Review Process: Applications will be reviewed, and funds provided, on a rolling basis, beginning February 15, 2021, until the allocated resources are fully utilized.
